Company auditions May 22, 2021

Try-outs for Houston’s #1 dance competition team are Saturday, May 22!

A second date later in the summer may be announced later and as always, we take video submissions!

Dance Du Coeur’s company consists of several levels, from Minis who are 5-6 years old to our Teen Convention team, 13 and up. For the junior and teen/senior teams, there are two levels: the competition track or the convention track. The convention track is for more serious dancers who are willing to commit more time (and weekends) to their dance training. It is highly selective. Teen competition team is designed for dancers 13-18 who want a lighter schedule and fewer competitions so they can do other activities, including school dance team.

To audition, simply email us at info@sugarlandDance.com with subject line “audition for company” before May 22. Cost is $10 per student.

Times are:

1:00-2:00 p.m. for ages 5-8

2:15-3:15 p.m. for ages 9-12

3:30-4:40 for ages 13 and up.

We can also arrange for your child to attend a technique class at the studio for the $10 price and a decision will be made based on the teacher’s observations.

For audition, dancers should wear a leotard or dance top with lycra shorts or leggings. Hair should be in a pony tail or bun. Boys should wear black pants or shorts and a T shirt. You may audition in jazz shoes or bare feet. Dancers will be taught contemporary and jazz combinations to do across the floor. The directors will conduct a brief interview with each applicant and ask them (and one parent) to complete a questionnaire.

Results will be emailed to you by Monday, June 7.

Directors will be looking for the following skills at the audition. You don’t have to have everything perfectly, but need to demonstrate a strong potential for achieving these goals if the skills are not yet developed:

Minis (ages 5-6): Able to demonstrate some flexibility as well as basic technique including tendus, passé on both sides, chassés on both sides, chaînés on both sides, to be able to stay on rhythm with the music, point and flex feet, skip, jump off two feet and have a love for dance!

Petites (ages 7-9): Everything listed under Minis, plus able to execute a single pirouette on the right and left side, do battements across the floor, cross ball changes across the floor, and demonstrate a clarity of body positions with sharp arms in movement where applicable. Must have a basic knowledge of musicality (knows how to count music) and their right and left splits.

Juniors (ages 10-12): Able to execute a clean double pirouette on the right and left side. Can execute jazz progressions across the floor including battements, cross ball changes, single and double pique turns as well as chaînés. Must be able to do grande jeté’s, center leaps, axel turns. Loves to perform and smiles in class! Clarity of body positions (sharp arms in movement where applicable).

Teens and Seniors (13 and up): Able to execute clean triple pirouettes on the right and left side as well as fouetté turns. Has strong technique and movement dynamics. Jazz progressions include double pique turns, chaîné turns, single and double barrels, center leaps, switch leaps, etc. in which we are able to see strong body lines, use of plié, shift of weight through space. Must demonstrate clarity of body positions (sharp arms in movement where applicable), right and left splits. Can bring an emotional quality to their dancing and has great stage presence. Displays strong sense of core and abdominal work.

If your child is accepted on company and you decide to join One Beat, you will need to sign a contract and make your first company payment (deposit) of $750 within two weeks. Deposit is $250 for minis. This payment is non refundable to ensure your commitment. It will be applied to your company dues, however. If you are on Company, do not make any travel plans or commitments for August as this time must be left open to schedule choreography. This is very important! Acceptance to the junior or teen/senior teams will be to either the competition track or the convention track. The convention track is for more serious dancers who are willing to commit more time (and weekends) to their dance training. It is highly selective.

We are only allowing 12 company students per class this summer in order to even out numbers across the weeks, so please enroll early if certain weeks are essential due to other scheduled activities. If you wait too long to sign up, you risk not being able to fulfill the requirements. On a weekly basis, we will assess enrollment in each class and cancel those with fewer than three students enrolled. If your child’s class is cancelled due to low enrollment, they can select another from the schedule to make it up. Otherwise, no make up classes are allowed in the summer and there are no refunds for missed classes. If your child misses a class, you will need to pay for it. Please do not call the front desk to change your child’s schedule! Exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis. Select your classes from the online schedule and enter the promo codes below before checking out. Your payment will be processed once Callie confirms that there is space available in the class and that the dancer is enrolled in the right class. Please ONLY sign up for classes at your child’s current level or based on the recommendation of company directors.
